Good afternoon and welcome to issue 40 of our newsletter.

I took my holidays in July this year (see recommended reading opposite) which is why there has been a longer than usual delay between newsletters.

I remember the days when Augusts were very quiet. Not this one though. It is shaping up to be one of the most eventful summers in recent memory with leaders in the EU and the US all provoking panic throughout the financial markets.

With Berlin and Athens arguing over the wording of their latest Greek tragedy and the American Congress choking on their tea, it has been an almost unbelievable sequence of self inflicted crises.
